The HSE and MHRA have expressed concerns about the lack of pre-use and LOLER checks on hoists and slings before lifting people. These do not take ages and it is important that anyone using the equipment should know how to and carry out these simple checks.
Before using a sling you should spend a few seconds just checking the integrity of the fabric and straps and the attachments of the loops. This means everyone using the sling should be trained in what to look for and what to do about it. You should also check the hoist you are about to use - if it is a ceiling hoist lower it down to check that the strap is intact. On any hoist look at the date of the last inspection. There should be a sticker saying either when it was last inspected or when it is next due and inspection. These inspections should be carried out by a 'suitably competent person' this means someone with relevant training and experience. It is also important to check that the sling is compatible with the hoist and you are not trying to use a loop sling with a clip hoist or vice versa.
Any manual handling training that includes the use of hoists must include training on these checks. That is why it forms one of the competencies to be demonstrated when attending training from Positive Positioning.
