Back care in everyday life

Yesterday I delivered training for the learning support assistants at the Seashell Trust Cheadle. The topic was Back Care in Everyday Life; the one hour training was delivered 4 times to different groups of people.
We discussed the mechanics of the spine and common causes of back injury such as gardening, lifting washing, bending with straight knees and bent back.
Almost everyone attending the training had suffered form back pain at some point in their lives and 4 people continue to suffer daily.
We discussed how to improve the way we move and how difficult it is to change habits especially when time feels pressured.
The verbal feedback from the day was that the session was thought provoking and fun. People liked the model of the vertebrae with slipped disc as they could look a it and take it apart.
I will be back at teh Seashell Trust in November to update their manual handling trainers.
